The Anaġi Leadership Award
Honoring Jacob Anaġi Adams
Promoting Education
This award was created to acknowledge the leadership of retired Arctic Slope Regional
Corporation President, Jacob Anaġi Adams. Throughout his career, Anaġi dedicated his
efforts towards improving the lives of ASRC shareholders, Arctic Slope residents and
all Alaskans.
Anaġi began his career with ASRC after it was established by Congress under the Alaska
Native Claims Settlement Act in 1971. He was elected to the first board of directors,
and has served on the board ever since.
Other notable Anaġi accomplishments include serving as a Barrow City Council member at
the age of 21. During the formative years of the North Slope Borough, Anaġi was elected
to its first assembly and was appointed as Mayor to succeed the late Eben Hopson, Sr.,
a visionary that passionately worked towards Iņupiat rights and self determination.
Jacob is first and foremost a whaler. As a whaling captain, he has had the privilege of
serving the Iņupiat community. He and his wife Lucille, and the Anaġi whaling crew have
had the honor of feeding countless people many times. His spirit of sharing stems from
this timeless Iņupiat tradition.
In 1971, the International Whaling Commission issued a ban on Iņupiat subsistence whaling.
Anaġi was instrumental in organizing the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission (AEWC), where
he served as Chairman from 1977 until 1980. Through Anaġis efforts, AEWC has successfully
defended Iņupiat rights to harvest the bowhead whale, allowing us to continue the traditions
of our Iņupiat whaling culture.
Anaġis commitment to the welfare of Alaskas Native people continues. He is a longtime member
of the Barrow Volunteer Search and Rescue and has actively supported the Native sobriety
movement. He remains active in state and national politics.
